Poetry of Flowers Collection

​The Poetry of Flowers collection is inspired by the first buds of spring, falling in like with a new person, and getting caught up in the hope for bright possibilities. It is that feeling that things are a little too good to be true and being enchanted by the beauty of the view through rose colored glasses. The paintings feature some thick texture, metallics, and beading to give the flowers a slightly surreal feeling.

The color magenta is also present in all of the paintings because it isn’t a “real” color. Magenta is a story that our brains make up to fill in the gaps of the color spectrum becoming a color wheel (our brains don’t want red and violet to mix and make brown). I feel like this is such a great metaphor for the stories that our brains tell us about hope and believing in something better.

And don’t get me wrong - I’m not a nihilist. I think there is so much beauty in hope and belief and faith. It is enchanting and playful, albeit not always grounded in reality and facts. Realism is the domain of scientists, and this is poetry.

Poetry of Flowers at the Buchanan Center For arts

In January and February of 2024, the Poetry of Flowers collection was on display in the Buchanan Center for the Arts in Monmouth, IL. While on display, I gave an Old Friends Talk Art presentation about the collection. In the presentation, I went a little more in depth on the story of the collection, how the story translated into the art, and the reason behind why this collection is so important to me.
