War Paint

Makeup and clothing can be used to tell a story - as a form of functional & wearable art. A certain shade of lipstick - when paired strategically with my outfit & my mood - can give me a boost in confidence & strength. It’s the war paint I wear for my battles against this crazy world.

My War Paint collection is my ode to lipstick. I wanted these pieces to be bold, beautiful, & to invite the viewer to inspect closer. The thick, handbuild canvases are topped with deep layers of texture, color, & intrigue in the background. A big lip print adorns each canvas, and shows off a piece of my lipstick collection and a piece of my story of rediscovering my power & strength.

Regaining Confidence

A number of years ago, I accepted a job where I worked for a female boss. She had the opportunity to be a mentor and support me as a young female in a department that was predominately male. Instead she chose to use her position of power to gaslight me, dismantle my ability to trust myself, and tear down my confidence.

After I left that job, I felt like a shell of myself. I felt like I lacked personality & confidence & self worth. Almost a year and a half after leaving the job, I wrote in my journal about how I was finally starting to feel like myself. But that wasn’t real. Not yet. I was mistakenly looking for my confidence & self worth in other people - specifically men. Somehow it never worked. Not only was my method wrong, but I also had the wrong goal. I thought somehow that I could be brought back to the version of me that existed before.

But that version of me is gone. And eventually I learned that the goal wasn’t to get the old me back, but to become a stronger version of me despite what happened. Slowly I healed, regained confidence, & learned to trust myself again. It’s taken time, and I think I will always feel like a work in progress, but I no longer feel like a shell of myself.

Bedroom Styling Ideas - West Elm

The War Paint collection can be hung in a gallery wall style above a bed. Hung in two rows of five (five inches apart), the War Paint collection measures 90" - an ideal measurement for above a bed with some bedside tables.

To get this elegant look, start with romantic bedding like the Crinkle Velvet Duvet Cover & Shames from West Elm in the color Dusty Blush. Remember to add in some plants to give the place some life. Even fake ones will do, like this Faux potted rubber tree that brings in some of the darker shades of burgundy from the paintings. Top the place off with some glamour with the Candice Luter Glissando Mirror. You'll need to check your lipstick in it before heading out the door.

Living room styling Ideas - West Elm

Another great place to hang the entire War Paint collection is above the sofa in the living room. The brown leather and clean lines of the sofa help bring some masculine energy to balance out the feminine energy of the lip prints.

To add some softness, color, and texture to the sofa, I've paired it with the Geo Facet Jacquard Velvet Pillow in Argon Oil, the Mongolian Lamb Pillow in Pink Grapefruit, and the Braided Jersey Pillow in Oatmeal. Women Working

"Women Working" is also on display at the Art Garage.

The “Women Working” painting was inspired by the “Men Working” signs that can sometimes be found near road construction. I encountered one of those signs when I was in just the right mood, and I found it really annoying. I texted my former professor saying that I wanted a sign that said “Women Working”.

So I made one.
