Love Letter postcardsOne of my favorite parts of the Love Letters to Myself collection is the wall of Love Letter postcards. Each postcard is hand painted on the front and the back features a handwritten “love letter” on the back.
The idea was inspired by these little cards from Moo that they ship with my business cards and other printed paraphernalia. One side of the card is boring print details and the other is this cute little message like “you’re cooler than chocolate milk.” And what could be a fairly mundane piece of paper is transformed into a magical little moment for me. And so I wanted to create these postcards with sweet messages and words of encouragement that I hope resonate with people. |
Occasionally I will write myself little messages on sticky notes - either affirmations, words of encouragement, or things to remember. I wanted Be Brave and Have Courage to feel like these little sticky notes. They are 4"x6" and 6"x4" respectively, and they are packed full of color and imagery.
Size Details: "Have Courage" is a 6"x4" oil painting on stretched canvas. There is a hanging wire on the back.

In French "je ne sais quoi" is an ineffable quality. She's got a certain je ne sais quoi. It literally means an "I don't know what". Je Ne Sais Quoi is part of a triptych of "I" statements along with I Like my Chai Double Dirty and I Deserve a Gold Star.

I Deserve a Gold Star comes from the Motion City Soundtrack song called Worker Bee. As I kid, I remember getting stickers or other little achievement tokens for doing good things - especially at day care. And I would like to think that I still deserve those little tokens as an adult. I Deserve a Gold Star is part of a triptych of "I" statements along with Je Ne Sais Quoi and I Like My Chai Double Dirty.

A double dirty chai is a chai latte with two shots of espresso. For some reason the tea and coffee combination makes my little heart happy. It is my go-to drink at nearly every coffee shop (unless I'm getting black coffee). I Like my Chai Double Dirty is part of a triptych of "I" statements along with Je Ne Sais Quoi and I Deserve a Gold Star.

Learning to enjoy the journey has been a practice for me lately. While I have big dreams and things that I want to accomplish, enjoying where I'm at and loving my life now is also important. Living my life in the future isn't a recipe for success. I've needed to learn to be present and Enjoy the Journey.

For the piece Being a Damsel in Distress Sounds Exhausting, I wanted to create a subtle, feminine, and romantic feeling. At times in my life, I feel like there has been an expectation for me to play the "damsel in distress" role, and that's never really sat well with me. I don't want to wait around for a knight in shining armor to rescue me. I don't have the patience for that. I want to own my feminine energy and strength and save myself.

The Perpetual Discrepancy Between the Soul & Its Envelope comes from the book The French Art of Not Trying Too Hard by Ollivier Pourriol (included on the suggested reading list for the collection. This poetic line gets to the core idea of suffering in the Buddhist teachings. Our envelopes are prone to greed, anger, and ignorance (wanting things, not wanting things, and being unaware). I got chills when I read this line in his book because it hit home that hard.

In the TV show The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, one of the characters talks about the idea of there being a good side to giving up. Because sometimes giving up on one thing means making space for something better. And somehow this ridiculous low-budget comedy TV show got me in my feels hard.

There is a guided meditation that I occasionally listen to that talks through the idea of equanimity and spreading loving kindness to all beings. While I’m mostly on board with that, there are a few people that I have a hard time extending loving kindness to. And it's not that I wish them ill will.. just minor inconveniences. And I’ve made peace with that level of questionable karma.

As I've grown, I feel like adapting to my new surroundings has been one of the things that either pushes me forward more or holds me back. Since starting this collection, it has been a mission of mine to release my grasp on things that no longer fit into my new reality and were holding me back from growth. Sometimes it is a bittersweet process, but it is what helps make space for new things to come into my life.

The funny thing about healing and growing is that life happens and some of the petty urges to react still exist. I’m just more aware of them now. So occasionally when life happens and I’m tempted to act in unskillful ways, I text a friend to say that I don’t want to be the better person. And usually its enough to get me through the moment so that I can act skillfully and in alignment with how I want to show up in the world.

In French, amuse bouche means "entertain the mouth." It usually refers to a little bite served before the main course of a fancy dinner used to delight the diners and get their mouth ready for what's to come. With my Amuse Bouche painting, I had the idea that it would serve as an Amuse Bouche for the collection. A tiny little bite-sized painting that gives you a taste of the collection.

I love the idea of romanticizing reality and the mundane moments in life. One of the days I lived this idea out really well, my to do list included eating lunch and filling out paperwork that needed to be turned into City Hall. I could have made that as mundane as possible. But instead I got lunch from a restaurant downtown and ate it on the City Deck along the river where I watched the water as I filled out my paperwork then walked the five minutes to City Hall to turn it in. That could have been an incredibly dull afternoon, but I intentionally chose to fill it with beauty and joy.

In the movie 13 Going on 30, the 13 year old version of the main character wishes in a closet to be “Thirty, Flirty, & Thriving” like she read in a magazine article to escape from her struggles as an awkward teen. If you had asked me at 13 or even 20 what I thought “Thirty, Flirty, & Thriving” would look like, I would have given you an answer that is very different than the version I am living now.

Vodka Cranberries are sometimes seen as the quintessential female drink - and yet I cannot stand them. I don’t drink vodka, and I’m not really a fan of fruity drinks. Except fruited sour beers - those are my favorite. This felt like another thing on the (long) list of things that made me feel like a black sheep, but now I enjoy owning everything on that list and being me - as weird as I am.

I used to wait for the person or the next milestone in life before I started living. But then I started buying myself the flowers instead of waiting for someone to buy them for me. I started going out and doing things I wanted to do instead of waiting for someone to go with. I didn’t need to keep waiting for something to happen before I could start enjoying my life. I can enjoy my life now.

Find Me in the Middle of the Dance Floor is a celebration of life (and not the kind that happens after someone dies). I love to dance and sing even though I'm horribly tone deaf. It's fun. And from what I've heard, we don't have to be any good at our hobbies. And so I am not one of those people that needs some liquid courage in order to make their way out to a dance floor. I will happily make myself a dance floor in my car, in a store, or out on the dance floor even when its empty.

“You’re the art, babe” was once sent to me via text message. It was this affirmation that everything I do is art - not just the paintings I create. The clothes and make-up I wear, the way I decorate my house and landscape my yard, the way I move through this beautiful thing called life. It’s all art. It can be as mundane or as marvelous as I want to make it.
The idea with this painting and its companion, Show Offy Artistry, was to create a combination of stained glass sections that were loud and flamboyant and contradictory, but at the same time played nicely together. The cool toned polka dots, pink leopard print, gold designs on chartreuse, and rich purple create this weird harmonious mix.

"Show Offy Artistry" was once sent to me in a text message regarding tattoo ideas and the fact that some ideas had more show offy artistry than others. And that idea stuck with me. There is a certain artistry and flamboyance with which I like to live my life. Despite being an enneagram five (which are notorious for being bland, neutral, and sad beige), I love color and pattern and making a statement.

The Best Kind of Crazy comes from conversations with one of my close friends. Her belief is that I - on occasion - am the best kind of crazy. And it tends to be the moments where I follow my gut with reckless abandon. These moments have generally turned out well and sometimes have turned into some great stories.

I was talking with two friends about my decision to stop trying to seem normal when meeting new people - especially in dating. I said the words "I don't get any less weird the more you know me." And that feels incredibly true. I'm weird, and I don't care if you think I'm weird. I don't want people to like a version of me that isn't real. That's not sustainable. I would rather be liked for exactly who I am.

What’s the difference between a crocodile & an alligator?
One will see you in a while and the other will see you later.
I had a little printout of this joke hung up at my desk when I worked in a toxic work environment. I hated my life, and I didn’t know how to escape. And somehow having this little joke to greet me everyday helped get me through. So now this joke serves as a little reminder to smile. Laughter is the best medicine after all.

I have been guilty of trying to force a story or a path in life that clearly wasn’t working for me. I felt like I was swimming against the current and working hard to get nowhere. Hitting roadblocks and resistance at every turn. It felt like no matter how hard I worked or how much I wanted something, it was just out of reach for me. But that isn’t always the case. Sometimes - when it’s the right story - things flow easily and the resistance felt in the wrong story floats away. This painting feels like getting swept up in the current, and moving forward gracefully in a story that is working.

It sounds completely counterintuitive, but asking myself “what’s the worst that could happen?” is one of the ways I help manage anxious thoughts. For some reason, it really helps to put things into perspective for me. In this painting, my goal was to create a chaos that felt manageable. The primary colors and basic shapes allow for the chaos to be sorted and categorized. It can be put into perspective.

One genre of reels that the algorithm loves to send me is unusual revenge plans. I love them. It's funny and devious and the weirder, the better. But here’s the thing, I wouldn’t use any of them. I don’t really hate anyone enough. Hating people and seeking revenge seems exhausting.

There is a saying that "change is the only thing that remains constant." And while I agree that everything is changing around me, I do feel like there's an eternal soul within me that is always present. Something that remains as the world around me and my physical presence in this world changes. Things are always changing, growing, and evolving.

I don't think I could tell the story of this collection without including a chapter about my body and learning to fall in love with it. There have been many times in my life when I hated my body, starved her or overfed her, used exercise as a punishment or didn't move her, treated her poorly, picked at every flaw and imperfection, or wished that she could look different - better, thinner, prettier.
And now I'm finally at a place where I am thankful for everything my body has done for me. She's not perfect, but she does a pretty remarkable job of getting me around in this world. And I want to take care of her as well as I can because this is the only body I have, and I don't get a spare.

As I was working on this collection, the “she’s a ten, but…” trend was working its way around the internet. Case Kenny (author of That’s Bold of You on the reading list) was like “nahhhh, she’s a ten and that’s it.” And that’s such a vibe. I saw a reel that talked about the idea that it's easy to be on your best behavior during favorable conditions and when things are going well. But it's the moments when things aren't going well that will make being on your best behavior challenging. This got me thinking about what my favorable conditions are and how I can try to create more of them for myself while understanding that plenty of things in life will absolutely be out of my control.
And for me, I consider favorable weather conditions to be sunny & 75.

Rainbow Zebra is named after a cloth children’s book that my grandmother gave to me and my sister. It’s about a zebra that has rainbow colored stripes instead of the classic black & white stripes. Feeling different than his herd, he leaves on a quest to find somewhere he belongs. His journey ends after a rain storm that brings a rainbow, and he learns to appreciate his colorful stripes that make him unique from his herd.
The rainbow zebra stripes in my painting are made up of cuts from old paintings. Like Taylor Swift's Eras tours, each of these old paintings come together to tell different parts of my story of learning to appreciate what makes me unique from my herd.
Size Details: "Rainbow Zebra" is a 24"x36" oil painting on stretched canvas. There is a hanging wire on the back.

The Love Letter postcards are inspired by the little notes that Moo sends with my orders for business cards and other packaging materials. There is a little card with print details on one side and a cute message like "you're cooler than chocolate milk" on the back. I collect them. Because its adorable and it puts a smile on my face.
So my Love Letter postcards have a painting on the front and a little "love letter" on the back. These are love letters and little reminders that I have needed, and I hope they resonate with you as well.
SPOILER ALERT:
I wasn't sure if people would want to know what their "love letter" said or not, so I'm giving you the option. You can purchase a Love Letter postcard blind and be surprised by the message on the back, or you can look at the list below to see what the message says and handpick one that resonates with you (or the person you are buying it for).
